Caring for your jewellery

A common question from people buying jewellery is “How do I keep it clean and sparkling?” Daily exposure with substances like hand cream, hair spray and household cleaning products, can be detrimental to the visual appearance and durability of your jewellery. Some gemstones are more susceptible to damage than others and should be treated with a little more care, but by following our guides, you should be able to keep your jewellery in superb condition.

1 When styling your hair, applying your make-up or spritzing yourself with perfume, be sure to put your jewellery to one side to avoid contact with any harsh chemicals

2 Remove your jewellery before swimming, showering or bathing. Not only can chemicals in the water tarnish gold, but certain gemstone treatments can be affected by sudden changes in temperature. Also should any settings be unstable, a loose stone could be washed away!

3 If and when you’re required to do the housework, place your jewellery in a safe place to be sure you don’t damage any settings or stones. Some gemstones are very durable, but others are a little more susceptible to chipping.

4 When storing your jewellery, try to keep each piece separately wrapped or stored in a small pouch to avoid unwanted contact or tangling.

5 To clean your jewellery, pop some warm water and mild washing up liquid in a small bowl. Use a soft bristle brush to gently sweep away any dirt holding the jewel over the bowl. Clean off with clean water and pat dry with a lint free cloth.

6 If for any reason you are concerned about your jewellery, or have particularly old or delicate pieces, please take it to your local Jewellers and ask them to carry out a professional clean.
